Sunlabob Director Andy Schroeter was one of three Social Entrepreneurs recognized as leading social innovators in Asia during the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting of the New Champions 2010, held in Tianjin, People’s Republic of China, on 13-15 September.
The World Economic Forum is an independent international organization committed to improving the state of the world by engaging leaders in partnerships to shape global, regional and industry agendas. This year’s forum featured a group of 30 Social Entrepreneurs from around the world taking part in the meeting, providing an on-the-ground perspective to sustainability and social innovation
With over 10 years at Sunlabob’s helm, Mr Schroeter has taken rural electrification in Laos and surrounding regions to new heights by introducing innovative business models and sustainable renewable energy solutions to remote areas where the public electricity grid does not yet reach.
Through public-private partnerships, Sunlabob brings renewable energy technologies to off-grid areas by installing solar stations, solar home systems and village hybrid grids. To encourage local enterprise development and ownership, Sunlabob trains village technicians and village committees to maintain, recharge and rent out the lanterns. In addition, Sunlabob provides consultancy services, expanding internationally into Uganda, Cambodia and Afghanistan through franchise agreements.
