On Feb 16, 2011, Sunlabob International Managing Director, Simon Henschel, represented Sunlabob at the first Global Off-grid Lighting Association (GOLA) meeting held in New Delhi, where the overall objective was to set up concrete steps for the incorporation of the newly formed association and sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU).
The association’s members, representatives from 12 organisations, attended the meeting and indicated their primary intention to support and promote the sustainable development of clean off-grid lighting solutions in developing nations, enabling economical, ecological, and social benefits for all stakeholders through the reduction of fuel-based lighting systems. Members also discussed and came up with standard industry regulations and guidelines for stakeholder collaboration.
Furthermore, a business plan was introduced and members agreed that the plan would be reviewed after 2 years to ensure that it truly reflects the direction and intention of the association. With that it was requested that the business plan should include a separate point on ‘objectives’ ensuring that this is representative and consistent with the MOU. Further discussion was held on services, structure & governance, budget, funding and work on the mission wording to ensure that it represented the nature of the organisation.
Besides the Global Off-grid Lighting Association, Sunlabob is also a member of the working group on solar lantern and biogas for Clean Energy for All, initiated by the ADB.
